I Didn't Recognize the Woman in the Mirror. Maybe You Don't Either.
Three years ago, I was in the hospital fighting for my life with COVID pneumonia. For a week, I struggled for every breath while my partner abandoned me and our children to be with another woman.
When I came home and found out he'd left, I let out a silent scream. Tears rolled down my face.
But underneath the pain? Relief.
And in that moment, I understood: His rejection wasn't my failure. It was my PROTECTION.
But here's what took me years to understand: This wasn't my first narcissist. It was just the one who finally broke the pattern.
The Pattern I Didn't See
Narcissistic abuse didn't start for me in romantic relationships. It started in childhood.
I grew up with a narcissistic parent—learning early that my needs were burdens, my feelings were "too much," and love required performing for approval.
I watched my mother apologize for existing. Her mother did too. Three generations of women who believed love required erasing themselves.
Then came the narcissistic friendships—where I walked on eggshells, shape-shifted to maintain their approval, and accepted breadcrumbs while calling it "close friendship."
Then the narcissistic family—who gaslit me about my childhood, demanded I "keep the peace" by staying silent, and punished me for setting boundaries.
By the time I entered a romantic relationship with a narcissist? It felt like home. Not because it was healthy—but because it was familiar.
I'd been training for that relationship my entire life. And it nearly destroyed me.
The Question That Changed Everything
After he left, I still didn't recognize myself. Because I'd spent decades burying myself under survival personas—the Perfectionist, the People-Pleaser, the Caretaker, the Small One.
For two years, I asked: "How do I heal from what happened?"
Until I asked a different question: "Who am I when I'm not surviving?"
That changed everything. Because I realized: I wasn't broken. I was buried.
And the work wasn't about fixing myself. It was about excavating the woman who was always there underneath.
